3 Trending Mac and Cheese Concepts
In honor of National Mac and Cheese Day this July 14th, we took a look at recent menu trends in the category. According to a recent study by Datassential, these are three themes to keep your Mac hot.
Bites
This trend is in the adoption phase; appearing mostly at trendy restaurants. We’re talking about bites of fried mac and cheese, often served with dipping sauces. Applications range from upscale or “hi-lo” truffle fonduta versions to fun and approachable pub fare with a ranch dip.

Elevated
This is a trend in the proliferation phase, appearing in chain restaurants. Here we see usage of pasta shapes beyond traditional elbow as well as incorporating bold or unique cheeses such as goat, blue, or pepper jack. This can also include high-end toppings like crab, lobster or wagyu.

Meat loaded/BBQ
Also proliferating is meat-loaded or BBQ versions of mac and cheese. Classic or southern-inspired macs with pulled pork and brisket, BBQ sauces and drizzles. Long a favorite side at BBQ restaurants, this moves the mac to the center of the plate, the perfect stage for showcasing slow-cooked meats – often in smaller portions or maximizing protein SKU usage.
